Preliminary information from a Xenical and cyclosporine medication interaction study indicate a reduction in cyclosporine plasma levels when Xenical was coadministered with cyclosporine.
Xenical (brand name of generic Orlistat) is a prescription weight-loss drug that prevents fat in food from being absorbed into your body. Doctors prescribe Xenical for patients who meet certain criteria for obesity or who are at risk for health-related issues because of their weight.
Xenical should not be used if you are pregnant, nursing mother, have food absorption issues or reduced bile flow. If you are taking cyclosporine, talk to your doctor before using Xenical. Xenical reduces the absorption of vitamins, therefore, a daily multivitamin is recommended.
There are very few drug interactions that have been reported with Xenical. Xenical can decrease the amount of cyclosporine (brand names Sandimmune and Neoral) in your body when consumed together. If you take cyclosporine, you should separate your dose of Xenical by at least two hours. In addition, your doctor will monitor your blood levels.
Although Xenical does not interact with Coumadin (generic name warfarin), Xenical may increase the effects of Coumadin by preventing the absorption of vitamin K. Talk to your doctor if you are taking Coumadin.
Xenical can prevent the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K. For this reason, you should take a multivitamin supplement with these nutrients in it every day. Separate the time you take Xenical and these specific vitamins or multivitamins that contain these fat-soluble vitamins atleast by 2 hours. But before starting Xenical therapy, be sure to inform your physician and pharmacist about any medications you’re taking.
To reduce the chance of a drug interaction resulting in reduced levels of cyclosporine, Xenical and cyclosporine should not be taken within 2 hours of each other. More frequent monitoring of cyclosporine levels should be considered in patients which take both medications.
Because of ability of Xenical to lower the absorption of some kind of beta-carotene and fat-soluble vitamins, patients which take this pills should be counseled to take some multivitamin supplements daily at least 2 hours before or after taking Xenical.
Otherwise very few interactions have been reported for Xenical.
